Beads from Czechoslovakia
These are from a collection of Salesman Samples of glass bead necklaces bought on a trip to the Czech Republic. They came from Jablonec nad Nisou which was, and still is the centre of the czech glass bead making industry.
They are still on their original cards, with the model numbers stamped on. In a lot of cases they still have the original tags and/or the stamp of Zeleznobrodske Sklo on the card. I believe they had been stored in a warehouse untouched since the 1950s when they were made. They have certainly never been worn as they are firmly stitched to the original cards. They would make interesting and very unusual 'pictures' if framed in deep frames.
Zeleznobrodske Sklo was the name given to the company created in 1948 when the Czech glass industry was nationalised. It comprised 9 small glassworks situated in and around Zelezny Brod in Northern Czechslovakia, of which 5 specialised in costume jewelry. In addition, approximately 100 small jewelery and glass bead producers situated in and around Jablonec nad Nisou were also amalgamated into the company.
